Pancrezyme Medicine for Digestion in Dogs

Does Your Dog Have Problems with Digestion?

Pancrezyme is a medicine specifically made for dogs and cats to aid in digestion. Similar to humans, dogs can also suffer from pancreatic insufficiency. This is when the pancreas cannot produce enough enzymes for food digestion.

History of Pancrezyme

Pancrezyme is a brand name for pancrelipase, a pig-derivation that is a combination of amylase (to digest carbohydrates), a lipase (fats), and a protease (proteins). Amylase was explained by by Erhard Friedrich Leuchs in 1831, regarding saliva and the breakdown of starch. Claude Bernard found lipase in pancreatic juice in 1856. The first protease discovered was Trypsin by Wilhelm Kuehne in 1876.

When a dog’s pancreas does not produce all of the enzymes it needs for digestion, then EPI is likely present.  Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency (EPI) is a condition with many potential causes. These causes include acinar atrophy, chronic pancreatitis, hypoplasia and neoplasia. Dogs may show symptoms such as diarrhea and weight loss.

Pancrezyme Treatment

Pancrezyme is an oral tablet that is mixed with food prior to consumption. Due to pancreas defection, pet owners will likely have to administer this drug throughout the dog’s life. In addition to medication, dogs may have to follow a diet with more fat to regain any lost weight.

Owners should watch for signs of sudden diarrhea or vomiting—an allergic reaction. Those signs, along with facial swelling, shock or seizure may indicate an overdose. Please contact your veterinarian.

Other Pancrezyme Concerns

Please refrain from giving treats until treatments and conditions are stable, usually after a few weeks. This is because it is not easy to use an enzyme to counter each treat during the evaluation period. Recent studies attempt to improve enzyme delivery so that enzymes can efficiently work in the duodenum without their destruction in the stomach.
